What Should I Know about Coming to a Yoga Class?

  1. Be on time or come early to stretch. Arriving late to class not only compromises your experience; it also disturbs everyone else.
  2. Each time you come write your name legibly on the sign-in sheet, and punch your card if you purchased one. This is very important for accurate record keeping.
  3. Wear comfortable/modest clothing. Wear layers to control your body temperature.
  4. No foot wear required. If your shoes are wet please take them off outside the room to keep the floor dry.
  5. Fragrances (perfumes and colognes) are distracting and can cause irritation to those with sinus and respiratory sensitivity.
  6. Please no food or drink in class other than water. Chewing gum tenses the jaw and mouth. So gum should be avoided.
  7. Bring a mat, blanket or large towel (for comfort and personal cleanliness).
  8. Turn your cell phone off. Put your pager on vibration mode if you must leave it on.
  9. Jewelry holds energy and generally blocks the free flow of energy through our limbs. For your benefit remove wristwatch and other large pieces of jewelry prior to class.
  10. Eat light and at least 1 hour (2 hours is best) before class.
  11. For women, honor your body's cycles. During menstruation depending on the individual, long holding of strenuous postures and/or inversions can be contraindicated. As with any posture listen to your body, if it reacts negatively modifications should be made.
  12. Honor any physical or medical problems/conditions and if you are concerned, communicate with your teacher about your situation. In most cases modifications can be made so that you can still benefit from participating in class.
  13. Lastly, the relaxation at the end of the class is an important part of the full yoga experience. Relaxation reduces stress and is very restorative. Leaving early is a disservice to your self and distracting to others. If you do have to leave early please let your teacher know before class.
